Asia - in particular, South East Asia - has always been a hot favorite with tourists from industrialized world due to a sort of colonial aura it had acquired in the past and also due to the exotic culture this area offers to the jaded senses of people from the industrialized nations. Malaysia is a fine example of this small country getting attention due to its transformation.
Malaysia is a very intriguing country. It is modern yet immersed in old traditions and culture, a melting pot of races and religions yet moving on in a determined manner towards a modern all-embracing society, a country at once proud of the old heritage and also of its high standing in the modern world.
The People
Malaysia is situated in the South China Seas and is surrounded by China, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia, etc. It is quite natural therefore that over decades Malaysia has received a large influx of people from these surrounding countries; during the British rule, a large number of Indians had also been brought over and they also had settled down The result has been a bubbling melting pot of Malays, Indians, Chinese, Thais and many others races. The majority of Malaysians are Muslims but there is a large following of Hindu and Buddhist religions also. In the past this melting pot had, at times, become too hot and had started boiling over. However, the wisdom and sagacity of the leaders has managed to bring about more harmonious relations within this diversity. In fact, this diversity has made social life more colorful with various festivals of different religions being performed with gusto.
The Land
Malaysia enjoys a large coastline and has beautiful beaches with soft white sand. Malaysia is very popular among international tourist for the excellent beaches; there are a number of marine parks where dazzling corals and many aquatic species such as the moray eels, the clown fish, black-tip sharks, rock groupers, etc are in abundance. Malaysia has some of the oldest rain forests in the world such as the Taman Negara National Park which is a World Heritage site. This rain forest stretches over more than 2000 acres of land; the flora and fauna here has evolved over more than a hundred million years undisturbed by man or by any natural calamity. There are a number of other rain forests that are declared as National Parks in various parts of the country; Bako National Park is much smaller than Tama Negara but is very interesting; it has a large number of attractive features - it has beaches, waterfalls, parks, dense forest areas, everything.
Away from the coastal regions, Malaysia is a mountainous country, especially in the Eastern Malaysia. Mount Kinabalu - one of Southeast Asia's highest mountains - is in Malaysia. There are many limestone hills with labyrinths of caves. One of them near the capital, Kuala Lumpur, is a popular tourist spot. The main cave here is the holy shrine of a Hindu deity, Lord Subramanian. You approach the shrine by climbing 272 steps in the hill side; recently at the foot of the hill is a colossal statue of the deity has been installed. One of the extensive limestone cave systems in the Eastern Malaysia, Mulu Caves, is also a popular tourist destination.
The Nation
Malaysia is not all forests and caves and beaches! Malaysia has a throbbing commercial and industrial activity and its cities reflect the modernity in an awe-inspiring fashion. The ultra modern Petronas Towers, KL Tower, etc are not exceptions; there is more of this modernity reflected everywhere. Visit the Putrajaya, the administrative capital of the country and you will be surprised to see the tremendous effort made to blend modernity with the traditional architectural styles as well as futuristic ecological planning.
Visit some of the most luxurious malls where international brands are jostling and also visit the bustling night markets and the Chinatown where feverish bargaining in roadside stalls is done; you will understand the meaning of modernity living side-by-side with the traditions.
